State Theatre 805 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, MN, 55402

The Renaissance style design of State Theatre has been done by the architect J.E.O. Pridmore. And to add special visual effects, the theatre’s stage floor was created in glass. In 1925, the theatre witnessed the installation of a Wurlitzer pipe organ. And at then, the attendance of concerts that were organized every day cost 25 cents. The 1940s marked the installation of neon marquee and it runs the whole theatre.

Since its opening until 1978, the Theatre was used mainly as a movie house, in addition to concerts and vaudeville acts that were hosted there. At that time, its movie screen was the largest in the whole area of Mississippi River. The Jesus People Church took the theatre as its home between 1978 and 1989. And different alterations made inside and outside by putting the church signage instead of theatre’s. Between the years 1993 and 1996, the Ordway Music Theatre operated the theatre. And since 2005, the Hennepin Theatre Trust has owned and operated the theatre.

In 1989, the LaSalle Plaza was bought by the Minneapolis Community Development Agency considering the State. So, the theatre has been renovated with a cost of about .8 million. And it re-opening was done in November 1991. Since its reopening, the theatre has been hosting Broadway touring productions including for instance Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Sweeney Todd, Avenue Q, as well as concerts and films like "Grumpy Old Men." The film "Jingle All the Way" that appeared in 1996 with participation of Arnold Schwarzenegger featured State Theatre.
